Please, Please, Please... make sure that your antivirus is up to date. Updates come out at various times depending on what program you use. Most are updated daily and some are more often. This is your first line of defense.

Also make sure that your version of Windows is updated. Updates from Microsoft are usually released on Tuesday.

Do not forget to backup any files that cannot be replaced (photos, documents, etc.) There several ways of backing up including flash drives, CD's and DVD's, online backup sites (Mozy.com and ElephantDrive.com), or Windows Home Server. I have a Windows Home Server that will back-up my computers nightly. I also have an Elephant Drive that has all of my irreplaceable files.

Virus and Malware

I have recieved several calls with prople having virus in the past few weeks. The most common thing that I have noticed with the people who are calling is that all except 1 has AVG antivirus install on their computer.

Here is my suggestions for you to fix it yourself.

Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It can be downloaded from Downloads.com or by clicking here. Once this program is installed, run a scan and follow the instructions to clean the files. This program is free.

After removing the malware, you need to either update AVG or install another anti-virus program. (You can only have 1 anti-virus program install at 1 time) My favorite free anti-virus program is Microsoft's Security Essentials. It can be downloaded from Microsoft by clicking here.
